You have done rapid weight loss and gain and now you feel healthier, more confident than ever but now your body has stretch marks and you want them to go away. Stretch marks are a type of scar that develops when our skin is stretched or shrinks quickly beyond its natural limit. The sudden changes within our body cause collagen and elastin, which provide supports to our skin, to rupture. As the skin relaxes and heals, stretch marks appear.

They can appear in various conditions, during pregnancy, growth spurts that happen during puberty, rapid weight loss or gain, and weight training when you have rapid muscle growth.

Stretch marks are more likely to develop on your inner thighs. They do not cause any serious health harm to our body but it's kind of annoying to have something on your body. everyone doesn't need to go to develop stretch marks on their skin. Fluctuating hormone (hormonal imbalance) levels play an important role in this. One may be having a higher risk of getting stretch marks if their family member has it. Frequent use of corticosteroids to your skin can also cause a stretch mark.

When stretch marks appear for the first time, they tend to be red, pink, purple, dark-brown, or reddish-brown, according to your skin color. Newly stretch marks can be itchy and it may feel slightly raised. After some time, the color starts fading and the narrow bands sink beneath your skin. One can treat their stretch mark while they are red or purple to make their appearance fade away on our skin.

  1. Atrophic scars: they appear on the skin because of the loss of tissue. The appearance of these scars is serrated, depressed, or flat against the upper skin. They often appear darker than other areas of your skin. Examples are acne scars and chickenpox scars.

  1. Keloid scars: are the results of aggressive healing and overproduction of tissue. Appearance is characterized by thick, raised, and puffy scars. They are typically darkening than the surrounding area. They can grow outside the injured area.

  1. Hypertrophic scars: they appear because of the excess tissue that forms over the skin as it heals. Unlike a keloid scar, it does not grow beyond the injured area.

  1. Contracture scars: they result from large areas of skin being damaged or lost, typically from the burn. They appeared as tight, shiny skin that can restrict movement.
